Iran Condemns US Strikes on Syria

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Iranian Foreign Ministry’s spokesperson condemned the “aggressive and terrorist” military attacks by the US army against civilian targets in Syria’s Deir ez-Zur.

In a statement on Saturday night, Nasser Kanaani said the persistence of the US’ illegal military presence in Syria and its occupation of parts of the country as well as the US attacks against different targets in the Arab country constitute a violation of the international law and Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Denouncing the destabilizing acts of the Zionist regime and the US’ silence or Washington’s aiding and abetting of the fake regime, the spokesman said the White House’s claim that it is in Syria to fight Daesh (ISIL), which Washington played a key role in its creation, is merely a pretext used by the US to continue occupying Syria and plundering its wealth, including energy resources and cereal, the Foreign Ministry’s website reported.

Kanaani further rejected the accusations leveled by the US political and military officials against Iran, stressing that the US officials have always made baseless and unsubstantiated allegations and make judgments based on those claims, but the White House must know that this tactic is outdated.

The Iranian spokesman added that nobody will forget that General Qassem Soleimani and the Iranian counter-terror advisors have played a pivotal role in the fight against terrorism alongside the armed forces and people of Syria.

He underlined that the Islamic Republic of Iran’s military advisors are in Syria at the request of the Syrian government for the purpose of helping the country in its struggle against terrorism.

Kanaani finally stressed that the Iranian advisors will stand with Syria until peace, stability and lasting security is restored to the country.

The US and its allies invaded Syria in 2014 under the pretext of fighting Daesh. The Takfiri group came into being when Washington was running out of excuses to extend its meddling in West Asia or enlarge its scale.

Under former American president, Donald Trump, Washington, which has set up illegal outposts near major oil and gas fields in Deir ez-Zur province, began looting Syria’s crude and other sources of energy, sustenance and income. American forces still continue their illegal presence in the Arab country, although Damascus and its allies defeated Daesh in 2017, Press TV reported.

Iran’s military advisory support, led by the country’s chief anti-terror commander Lt. General Qassem Soleimani, played an indispensable role in helping Damascus defeat the terrorist group. The United States assassinated General Soleimani, who used to command the Quds Force of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), and his companions, in a drone strike near Baghdad International Airport on January 3, 2020.
