Labour and the Liberal Democrats have made gains in the early results of the 2023 local elections in England, with the Conservatives losing majorities in several councils. Labour won in Plymouth, Medway and Stoke-on-Trent, while the Liberal Democrats took Windsor and Maidenhead. The Conservatives lost their majorities in Tamworth, Brentwood, Hertsmere and North West Leicestershire. While only a minority of councils counted overnight, the initial results suggest Labour is making steady gains. The Green Party is also hoping to win outright control of its first council in Mid Suffolk. The vote is being seen as a test of Rishi Sunak’s electoral popularity since he became prime minister, but the majority of results will not be confirmed until later on Friday.
