Syria Calls for End to West’s ‘Economic Terrorism’

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Syria’s UN Ambassador Bassam Sabbagh addressed the 78th UN General Assembly session, urging the United States and its European allies to lift sanctions on other nations, condemning them as “economic terrorism.”

Sabbagh characterized Western sanctions as illegal, immoral, and inhumane. He accused Washington of destabilizing the West Asia region through its policies, leading to the rise of terrorism, and undermining international agreements and the UN Charter.

Sabbagh called for UN member states to collaborate in establishing a new multipolar world order.

China also called for the removal of “illegal unilateral sanctions” on Syria during a joint statement with the Syrian President, Bashar al-Assad, during his visit to China.

Syria has faced US sanctions since 1979, with intensified measures after the 2011 conflict.

Sabbagh criticized Israel’s violation of international law through the occupation of Syria’s Golan Heights, reaffirming Syria’s right to restore sovereignty over the entire occupied Golan.

He pledged Syria’s support for the Palestinian people’s struggle for their rights, including the establishment of an independent state with Jerusalem as its capital.
