adminTEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Ambassador to the United Nations Amir Saeed Iravani strongly condemned the recurrent violence by the Israeli regime against Syria, characterizing it as a smokescreen for Tel Aviv’s daily aggression towards the Palestinians.
Iravani made these remarks during a UN Security Council session on Syria held on Wednesday.
“We strongly condemn the ongoing attacks by the Israeli regime on Syrian territory,” Iravani stated. He went on to assert, “The Israeli regime commits such aggressions to divert the attention of the international community from the daily atrocious crimes [it] is committing against the Palestinian people.”
Israel has been frequently targeting Syria’s military positions and its allies since 2011, amidst the foreign-backed violence and terrorism that engulfed the Arab country.
The regime’s attacks primarily focus on positions held by Syria’s allies who have been supporting the nation in its battle against foreign-sponsored terrorist groups. Damascus has repeatedly voiced its concerns to the UN, urging the Security Council to take action against Tel Aviv’s actions. However, these pleas have largely gone unanswered.
Regarding foreign military presence in Syria, Iravani emphasized, “The fight against terrorism should not be utilized as a pretext to violate Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.” He noted that the United States and many of its allies launched a military campaign in 2014, ostensibly to combat the Takfiri terrorist group of Daesh, which had emerged in Syria and neighboring Iraq. Despite the defeat of the terror group in 2017, the US maintains a military presence in Syria.
“We firmly believe that the primary solution to the Syrian crisis lies in political means, as military actions will only further complicate the situation,” Iravani stressed. Additionally, he denounced the illicit exploitation of Syria’s resources, highlighting the ongoing smuggling of Syria’s oil and grain by the United States amid the Arab country’s dire economic situation.
